Washed Away
Washed Away explores the interactions that occur between land and sea in the Olympic Peninsula’s coastal environment. Literally washed away with bleach, these color darkroom prints juxtapose the dreary, desolate stretches of the coast with the variability, destructive power, and beauty of the ocean itself. Represented by bleach, the sea is a force of change where nothing is ever replicated twice. At low tide, the intricacies of marine life can be viewed up close and personal, yet the water ever slowly rises, never allowing for true tranquility. By allowing the individual layers of the darkroom print to dissolve, bleed, and dry, an intense contrast occurs between the unbleached monochromatic landscape and the vibrancy of the paper’s dye. The visual starkness of these prints creates a connection in the landscape, inviting the viewer to ask: Where does the ocean end, and land begin?
